The Election Commission has announced a series of restrictions on the movement of vehicles ahead of the 13th national parliamentary elections and referendum, set for February 12, 2025. According to the directive, there will be a ban on taxis, pickups, microbuses, and trucks from 12:00 midnight on February 11 until midnight on February 12.
Additionally, motorcycles will be restricted from 12:00 midnight on February 10 until midnight on February 13. However, exceptions to these restrictions have been outlined.
Exemptions include vehicles used by law enforcement agencies, the armed forces, administrative officials, and authorized election observers. Vehicles engaged in emergency services, as well as those transporting medical supplies, medicines, health-related goods, and newspapers, are also allowed to operate freely. Furthermore, vehicles carrying passengers to and from the airport, or transporting long-distance passengers, will not be affected by the restrictions, provided that the passengers present appropriate proof, such as tickets.
One vehicle per contesting candidate and their election agent is also permitted, with approval from the Returning Officer and proper identification displayed on the vehicle. Journalists, election observers, and vehicles involved in emergencies may also operate with the approval of the Election Commission and Returning Officer.
Motorcycles for election officials and personnel working on election-related tasks will be allowed as well, contingent on approval from the Election Commission.
Telecommunication services will be considered an emergency, and organizations licensed by BTRC may request relaxation of restrictions for vehicles related to national highways, ports, and major connecting roads.
The District Magistrate and Metropolitan Police Commissioner will have the authority to modify or enforce these restrictions for vehicles beyond the mentioned categories in accordance with the election schedule.
The notification was issued today by Al-Amin Md. Nurul Islam, Deputy Secretary of the Road Transport and Highways Department.
