DHAKA, Sept 18, 2025: Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus reaffirmed his government’s commitment to holding a free, fair, transparent and festive general election in early February next year, saying it will mark a new chapter in Bangladesh’s history.
He made the remarks while meeting a delegation of Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) led by Mounir Satouri at the State Guest House Jamuna. The discussion covered the government’s reform initiatives, EU support for Bangladesh’s development and democratic transition and the ongoing Rohingya humanitarian crisis.
Professor Yunus highlighted resuming student body elections in universities, noting growing public enthusiasm, especially among young voters, many of whom will vote for the first time in over 15 years. He stressed that the polls will be conducted peacefully and on schedule, despite attempts by some forces to delay them.
The MEPs praised the Chief Adviser’s efforts over the past 14 months and expressed optimism about the upcoming election. Dr Yunus also urged increased EU support for Rohingya aid, including reopening schools in camps affected by funding shortages, and acknowledged labour reforms aimed at strengthening Bangladesh-EU relations, as highlighted by Special Envoy Lutfey Siddiqi.
