The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has urged journalists to ensure factual and responsible coverage of the ongoing unrest in Khagrachhari, warning that misinformation could further escalate tensions in the region.
Sector Commander Colonel Md Abdul Moktakim made the appeal at a press conference in Swarnibhar Bazar on Monday, calling on all communities in the hill district to maintain peace and harmony during this sensitive period.
He assured residents that BGB forces would continue supporting the local population until stability is restored. Currently, nine BGB platoons have been deployed in the area, with two more on standby. Khagrachhari 32 BGB Commander Lt. Col. Kamran Kabir Uddin also attended the briefing.
The renewed tensions stem from a second day of road blockades in Guimara upazila by indigenous Jumma protesters, demanding justice after the rape of a 12-year-old Marma schoolgirl on September 23 and calling for the arrest of all perpetrators of violence against women in the Hills.
During Sunday evening’s unrest, three young men—Akhrau Marma, 22; Teiching Marma, 20; and Athuiprue Marma, 21—were shot dead, while several others sustained injuries.
The Jumma, a collective term for the indigenous peoples of the three districts of the Chittagong Hill Tracts, continue to press for justice and accountability amid heightened security measures in the region.
