Ahead of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad election and referendum, the Election Commission (EC) has imposed restrictions on the movement of certain watercrafts before, during and after polling day.
In a letter issued on Tuesday, the EC said the movement of launches and engine boats, except those on designated routes, will remain suspended from midnight of February 11 to midnight of February 12.
However, the restriction may be relaxed with permission from the Returning Officer for contesting candidates, their polling agents, and accredited local and foreign observers.
The EC clarified that the restriction will not apply to accredited journalists on election duty, officials and employees involved in election work, law enforcement members, and watercraft used for emergency services such as ambulances, fire service, electricity, gas, postal and telecommunication services.
Authorities may also take steps to ease restrictions for ports, emergency supply of goods and other special needs on major waterways.
Watercraft that are the only means of transport for voters and the public, as well as long-distance vessels, will remain outside the restriction.
The letter also said District Magistrates and Metropolitan Police Commissioners have been authorised to impose or relax the restriction considering local needs during the election and referendum.
