The Election Commission instructed the Dhaka Metropolitan Police that compensation for requisitioned vehicles during the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election and referendum be determined in accordance with the law.
In a recent letter to the DMP, EC Senior Assistant Secretary (election management and coordination wing) Md Shahidul Islam outlined the legal provisions for vehicle requisition and compensation.
Earlier on 1 February, the DMP wrote to the EC regarding vehicle requisition.
In response, the EC Secretariat shared the relevant rules and regulations on Thursday.
The letter stated that under the Representation of the People Order, 1972, and the DMP Ordinance, 1976, vehicles must be requisitioned for election duties, including patrols, mobile and reserve duty, transport of forces and materials, and related tasks.
Article 6 of the Representation of the People Order, 1972, allows the government to requisition vehicles or vessels for transporting election materials and personnel.
However, it specifies that vehicles or vessels used by a candidate or their election agent for election purposes cannot be requisitioned.
DMP Additional Commissioner (Traffic) Anisur Rahman told journalists that around 2,400 buses, 30 trucks, 1,100 legunas, and over 1,000 microbuses may be requisitioned for nine agencies, including the police, Army, Ansar, BGB, and telecom authorities.
