Dhaka, Oct 8, 2025 : The government has approved a proposal to import 50,000 metric tonnes of non-Basmati parboiled rice from India under the international open tender system for the fiscal year 2025–26.
The decision came at a meeting of the Advisers Council Committee on Government Purchase (ACCGP), which approved the proposal placed by the Ministry of Food. The Directorate General of Food will implement the procurement under Package-01, at a total cost of Tk 219.09 crore, with the price fixed at $359.77 per metric tonne.
Indian firm M/S Bagadiya Brothers Private Ltd has been selected as the lowest responsive bidder for the supply contract.
Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed, who chaired the meeting, said the government remains alert to the national rice supply situation.
“We are importing non-Basmati parboiled rice from India and wheat from the USA to strengthen reserves in case local procurement or production falls short,” he said.
He added that maintaining a government buffer stock is essential for market stability, noting that rice transport by truck has resumed, which will help ensure adequate supply and price stability.
In the same meeting, the committee also approved another proposal from the Ministry of Food to import 2.20 lakh metric tonnes of wheat from the United States under a government-to-government (G2G) arrangement.
The wheat import will cost Tk 825.31 crore, with the price set at $308 per tonne. Agrocorp International Pte Ltd, authorised by Wheat Associates, has been nominated to supply the wheat.
