An exceptional show of international respect was seen in Dhaka yesterday as foreign leaders, diplomats and representatives of international organisations attended the funeral of former prime minister and BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.
The Namaz-e-Janaza was held at Manik Mia Avenue, drawing senior officials from South Asia and around the world, reflecting her long-standing influence in regional politics.
Pakistan’s National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq and Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar arrived in Dhaka to represent their respective governments. Both held separate meetings with BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban and handed over official condolence messages. Jaishankar conveyed a message from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while Ayaz Sadiq delivered Pakistan’s formal tribute.
Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath, Nepal’s Foreign Minister Bala Nanda Sharma, Bhutan’s Foreign Affairs Minister Lyonpo D. N. Dhungyel, and a special envoy from the Maldives also attended, adding to the strong regional presence.
Ambassadors and high commissioners from nearly 40 countries, including the United States, China, Russia, the United Kingdom, Japan, Germany, Canada, Australia and the European Union, were present along with representatives of international organisations.
Their attendance highlighted Khaleda Zia’s political legacy and her role in Bangladesh’s democratic journey and international relations.
