The government has disbursed Tk 12.15 crore in educational assistance to 3,926 meritorious children of expatriate workers over the past year, according to an official report from the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment.
Additionally, Tk 10 lakh was allocated as allowances for 861 disabled children of expatriate workers.
Over the same period, insurance claims amounting to Tk 98 crore were settled in favour of the families of 1,864 deceased expatriate workers. The government also provided Tk 17.4 crore for transportation and burial of workers who passed away abroad, with each bereaved family receiving Tk 35,000.
To support expatriates facing illness or workplace injuries, the ministry extended Tk 9.17 crore in medical assistance to 1,007 sick or injured workers. Furthermore, 4,077 families of deceased expatriates received Tk 120.04 crore, with each family getting Tk 3 lakh as financial support.
Compensation, arrears, insurance, and service benefits totalling Tk 123.5 crore were realised on behalf of 1,047 workers who died abroad and subsequently handed over to their families.
The government also distributed Tk 17.55 crore among 1,290 Bangladeshi workers who returned home from Lebanon, following the escalation of conflict there.
In a significant diplomatic effort, authorities secured the release of 188 Bangladeshi expatriates imprisoned in the UAE for expressing solidarity with Bangladesh’s 2024 student-people movement, and announced Tk 94 crore in incentives for them.
The ministry continues to provide wide-ranging support services for expatriates, including safe homes for sick, disabled, or detained workers, legal assistance, repatriation of deceased workers, and free ambulance services through 44 Bangladeshi embassies abroad.
