The government has extended the deadline for individual taxpayers and Hindu undivided families to submit income tax returns for the 2025-26 tax year by one more month.
According to an order issued by the National Board of Revenue (NBR), the new deadline has been shifted from December 31, 2025, to January 31, 2026.
The extension was approved by the government and granted under the authority of Section 334 of the Income Tax Act, 2023, considering public interest.
This is the second deadline extension, as the original cut-off date of November 30 had earlier been pushed to December 31 due to practical challenges faced by taxpayers.
The NBR stated that the updated deadline is intended to ease pressure on taxpayers and ensure wider compliance. It also urged eligible taxpayers to complete their filings within the new timeframe to avoid any hassle
