The interim government is expected to transfer power to the newly elected government by February 17 or 18 following the upcoming national election, Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam said on Thursday.
Speaking to reporters at the Foreign Service Academy, Alam said the handover would take place as quickly as possible after the election. He explained that if members of parliament are sworn in within three days of the vote, the leader of the majority party could be appointed Prime Minister by February 15 or 16, making a transfer of power by February 17 or 18 likely.
The 13th National Parliamentary Election is scheduled for February 12, the same day a referendum on the implementation of the July National Charter will be held.
Separately, the Council of Advisers has decided to revise office hours during the holy month of Ramadan. Under the new schedule, government, semi-government, autonomous, and semi-autonomous offices will operate from 9:00am to 3:30pm. A 15-minute break from 1:00pm to 1:15pm will be allocated for Zohr prayers.
The decision was taken at a Council of Advisers meeting held at the Chief Adviser’s Office, chaired by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus. According to the Islamic Foundation, Ramadan is expected to begin on February 19, subject to moon sighting.
Alam also shared an overview of the interim government’s performance since assuming office in August 2024. He said the government has taken 526 decisions through 68 regular weekly meetings held between August 8, 2024, and January 31, 2026.
Of those decisions, 439 have already been implemented, reflecting an implementation rate of 83.46 percent. During the same period, the government issued 116 ordinances, with 16 still in process, including three that have already received policy-level approval.
In addition, the interim administration adopted 30 policy-related instruments—such as policies, guidelines, strategies, and action plans—of which 16 have been finalised and the rest are being implemented. The government also signed 14 bilateral agreements during this time.
Alam said the implementation rate was notably higher than that of previous governments and stressed that many of the ordinances involved major reforms rather than symbolic measures, with the potential to bring lasting change to people’s lives.
Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder, Senior Assistant Press Secretary Foyez Ahammad, and Assistant Press Secretary Shuchismita Tithi were present at the briefing.
