Mushfiqur Rahim made history on Thursday by becoming the first Bangladeshi cricketer to play 100 Test matches — and he celebrated the milestone with a century in the same game.
Starting day two on 99*, Mushfiqur played out the first over without scoring before taking a calm single off Jordan Neill in the next over to reach his hundred. He is now one of only 10 players to score a century in their 100th Test.
Bangladesh chose to bat in Mushfiqur’s landmark match and made a steady start, with Mahmudul Hasan Joy and Shadman Islam putting on 52 for the opening wicket. Both batters reached the 30s before falling to Andy McBrine, who removed Shadman for 35 and Mahmudul for 34.
Ireland struck again by dismissing captain Najmul Hossain Shanto before Bangladesh reached 100, but a 107-run partnership between Mominul Haque and Mushfiqur restored control. Mominul looked solid for his 63 before also falling to McBrine.
Mushfiqur then added an unbroken 90-run stand with Litton Das, strengthening Bangladesh’s position. At stumps on day one, Bangladesh were 292 for 4, with Mushfiqur on 99* and Litton on 47 — setting up the historic moment completed the next morning.
