The country will observe the 54th martyrdom anniversary of Bir Shreshtha Ruhul Amin tomorrow.
The Bangladesh Navy in Khulna has planned several programmes, including placing wreaths at the graves, arranging discussions, holding doa mahfils and Quran recitations.
On this day in 1971, six days before victory, Ruhul Amin of BNS Palash was killed on the bank of the Rupsha River after surviving an air attack on the ship.
Earlier that day, BNS Palash captured Mongla Port and moved toward Khulna. Near the Shipyard area, a fighter jet bombed the vessel, killing Bir Bikrom Mohibullah. The crew jumped into the river to escape.
Ruhul Amin swam to shore but was later killed by anti-liberation collaborators.
He and Mohibullah were buried in Bagmara village. In 1997, a memorial complex was built around their graves, now maintained by the Bangladesh Navy.
