Three accused in the murder case of Jagannath University (JnU) student Md Jobayed Hossain have given confessional statements in court, admitting their involvement in the killing. Police say the murder was orchestrated by two of the accused as part of a premeditated plan on 25 September.
The accused—Barjis Shabnam Barsha (19), Md Mahir Rahman (19) and Fardeen Ahmed Aylan (20)—recorded their statements under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure before Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrates Mehedi Hasan, Jewel Rana, and Masum Mia, Public Prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruqi confirmed on Tuesday. Another youth, Pritom Chandra Das, gave a statement as a witness.
Plaintiff’s lawyer Estiyak Hossain Zipu said the trial would proceed “in accordance with due legal process to ensure fair justice.”
Earlier, the victim’s elder brother, Enayet Hossain Saikat, filed a case with Bangshal Police Station against three named and 4–5 unnamed suspects.
Students Demand Justice
JnU students staged demonstrations on the CMM court premises, demanding maximum punishment for the killers.
“We will not let the blood of our brother Jobayed go in vain,” said Mehedi Hasan Himel, convener of the JCD’s JnU unit.
Premeditated Murder Over Love Triangle
According to investigators, Barsha and her “boyfriend” Mahir planned the attack after Mahir discovered Barsha’s relationship with Jobayed.
-
Mahir and two friends bought two new knives for the attack
-
Barsha was present in the building during the killing
-
Jobayed was stabbed on the first floor and later collapsed on the stairs while seeking help
Deputy Commissioner Mallik Ahsan Uddin Sami said Jobayed climbed to the third floor alive, begging for assistance. At that moment, Barsha allegedly said:
“If you do not die, I cannot be with Mahir.”
She then left, ensuring he succumbed to his injuries, police said.
DMP Additional Commissioner Nazrul Islam stated that Mahir, Aylan and another accomplice executed the attack, adding that the case bears resemblance to the Rifat Sharif murder in Barguna.
He emphasized that no political motive was found. “It is entirely a love-triangle-driven murder,” he said.
Condolence at JnU
JnU authorities held a condolence meeting, where Vice-Chancellor Prof Md Rezaul Karim called the incident “a matter of deep sorrow for the nation” and pledged support for a swift trial.
Case Background
Jobayed, who worked as a private tutor, went to Roushan Villa in Old Dhaka’s Armanitola around 4:30pm on 19 October. At 5:48pm, Barsha messaged a fellow student claiming Jobayed had been killed.
His elder brother later found the blood-soaked body on the stairway between the second and third floors.
Jobayed was buried on 20 October in his ancestral village in Cumilla Sadar.
Plaintiff Enayet said, “We have named only the real culprits. We want justice, not harassment of innocents.”
