Three buses were set ablaze in separate incidents across Gazipur on Tuesday night, in what authorities suspect to be planned arson attacks, police and local sources said.
The fires occurred in Bhogura, Chakraborti, and Sripur, spreading panic among locals.
In Bhogura, unidentified miscreants set fire to a bus parked near the Fire Service office in the Pyara Bagan area around midnight. Firefighters rushed to the scene and managed to douse the flames, though most of the vehicle was destroyed.
Around the same time, another bus was torched in the Berider Chala area of Sripur Upazila. Units from the Sripur Fire Service promptly responded and contained the blaze before it spread.
“Our two units responded to reports of arson in Bhogura and Sripur late Tuesday night and successfully contained the fires,”
said Mohammad Mamun, Deputy Director of Gazipur Fire Service.
Later, at about 10:30 pm, a third bus was set on fire in the Chakraborti area of Kashimpur, near the Jyoti Filling Station on the Nobinagar-Chandra road.
Witnesses said a mechanic was working beneath the bus when two youths on a motorcycle arrived, poured petrol, and set it ablaze before fleeing the scene. Locals immediately intervened to extinguish the fire and prevent casualties.
Kashimpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Moniruzzaman confirmed that no one was injured in the incidents and said law enforcement teams are conducting drives to identify and arrest the perpetrators.
