Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus has urged for strengthening the co-operative movement to establish an inclusive, equitable, and self-reliant Bangladesh.
He made the call in a message issued on Friday, marking the 54th National Co-operative Day, which will be observed across the country on November 1.
Extending his warm greetings and best wishes to cooperative members and citizens, Prof Yunus said, “I am delighted that the 54th National Co-operative Day is being celebrated nationwide with due dignity under the theme ‘Cooperatives build the nation through equality and equity.’”
He emphasised that social engagement is essential for the success of any development initiative and that cooperatives can serve as an effective tool to achieve this.
“Co-operatives are not just financial institutions but also platforms addressing various social issues,” he said, highlighting their role in uplifting disadvantaged communities, developing skilled manpower, and accelerating economic growth.
Prof Yunus noted that the interim government has taken several measures to modernise and revitalise the co-operative sector.
“Through co-operative-based initiatives in agriculture, fisheries, livestock, savings, credit, and cottage industries, we can build a self-reliant and equitable new Bangladesh,” he added, wishing success to all programmes marking the day.
