Election Commissioner Md Anwarul Islam Sarker on Sunday said that the National Citizens Party (NCP) cannot be allotted the ‘Shapla’ (water lily) symbol as it is not included in the official list of election symbols under constitutional provisions and existing election rules.
He made the statement while speaking to reporters at Sylhet Police Lines following a training session aimed at enhancing police preparedness and efficiency for upcoming election duties.
Responding to a question regarding the polls, the commissioner ruled out the possibility of delaying the election until February, ensuring that the national election will be held before Ramadan. He expressed confidence that, with cooperation from all stakeholders, this election will be fair — unlike some in the past.
Commissioner Anwarul further stated that individuals with controversial backgrounds will not be given any responsibilities related to election management. He warned that the Election Commission will not tolerate bias at any level, stressing that its only objective is to ensure a free, fair and credible election.
Addressing the police personnel, he underscored that the current situation demands unity, trust and coordinated efforts in order to uphold the law and fulfill constitutional duties responsibly.
