United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres today called Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus to express deep condolences over the death of six Bangladeshi peacekeepers in a drone attack in Sudan.
Guterres said he was devastated by the incident and expressed solidarity with Bangladesh, asking Yunus to convey his sympathy to the victims’ families, according to the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing.
Yunus said he was deeply saddened by the loss and urged the UN to ensure proper treatment for the injured soldiers and the quick return of the bodies. Guterres informed him that the injured were first treated in Sudan and arrangements were being made to transfer the seriously wounded to better hospitals.
Yunus thanked the UN chief for his support and recalled Guterres’ visit to Bangladesh during last Ramadan.
During the call, the two leaders also discussed the upcoming general election. Yunus assured that the interim government would hold a free, fair, peaceful and festive election on February 12, and Guterres expressed confidence in Bangladesh’s election process.
