A five-day Shaheed Osman Hadi Memorial Book Fair began at Dhaka University on Sunday, calling on people to uphold Hadi’s ideals.
DU Vice-Chancellor Prof Niaz Ahmed Khan inaugurated the fair at the Payra premises of the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC). The event is jointly organised by DUCSU and the Dhaka University Tarun Lekhak Forum, with support from Aurora Specialized Hospital.
A total of 22 publishing houses are taking part. The fair will remain open from 9am to 9pm every day until January 22. Cultural programmes and discussion sessions are also being held in memory of Osman Hadi.
Speaking at the opening, Prof Niaz Ahmed Khan said such events strengthen the university’s bond with society. He said Hadi always stood for justice and the oppressed. “His murder was not just an attempt to kill a person, but an ideology. We want justice for Shahid Hadi’s murder as soon as possible,” he said.
DUCSU Vice-President Shadik Kayem said Hadi’s ideology could not be silenced. “They thought they could end his dreams by killing him, but they failed. His ideas have spread everywhere,” he said, adding that they would ensure justice for his killing.
A large number of students visited the fair on its opening day, creating a lively atmosphere at the venue.
