In a striking scene in Nilphamari’s Saidpur, a groom arrived at a polling centre in his wedding attire to cast his vote before heading to his marriage ceremony.
Md Samiul Islam, 32, was scheduled to leave for the bride’s house at 12pm on Thursday. Prior to that, he went to Saidpur Pilot Girls’ High School polling centre to exercise his franchise.
After casting his ballot, Samiul said, “Voting is not only a right, it is our responsibility. No matter how busy life may be, even on a joyous personal day like today, I want to take part in the country’s democratic process. So, vote first, wedding later.”
A resident of Niyamatpur Sarkarpara area in Saidpur upazila, Samiul is the son of local resident Md Manjurul Islam.
His decision to prioritise voting on his wedding day has drawn praise from locals.
