Mirza Abbas, BNP candidate for Dhaka-8 constituency, has convincingly defeated his long-time rival, NCP Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary, by securing over 5,000 more votes.
Dhaka Division Commissioner and Returning Officer Sharaf Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury announced the result around 3:45pm on Friday.
After addressing allegations of irregularities, Mirza Abbas won 56, 552 votes in 108 polling centres, and 2,814 postal votes.
In total Mirza Abbas won 59,366 votes.
Patwary won 51,572 votes in in-person voting, and 2,555 postal ballots. In total, he won 54,127 votes, losing to Mirza Abbas by 5,239 votes.
Islami Andolan Bangladesh candidate Kefayet Ullah won 1,436 votes and Gono Odhikar Parishad candidate Meghna Alam won 608 votes.
